When to stop searching and call someone

The most important page in the Village. Knowing where the line is is what lets you rest on the other side of it.

Fruitful Village writes about gentle, natural-minded care. This is the page we most want you to read.

Natural-minded mothering goes wrong in one predictable way: waiting too long. Knowing where the line sits is what lets you be calm about everything on the other side of it.

For your baby — call now

  • Any fever in a baby under three months. That's an emergency department conversation, not wait-and-see
  • Difficulty breathing, fast breathing, grunting, or pulling in at the ribs or neck
  • Fewer wet diapers than usual, no tears when crying, or a sunken soft spot
  • A baby who is floppy, unusually hard to wake, or won't feed at all
  • A rash that doesn't fade when pressed with a glass
  • A first seizure, or a stiff neck

For you — call now

  • Soaking a pad in an hour or less, or clots bigger than a plum
  • A fever, or a hot, red, painful area on your breast
  • A headache that won't shift, vision changes, or sudden swelling in your face and hands
  • Calf pain, chest pain, or shortness of breath
  • Any thought of harming yourself or your baby

Ask before you start, not after

  • Any supplement or herb for a baby under twelve months
  • Anything at all in pregnancy or while breastfeeding
  • Anything alongside a prescription — interactions are real and usually manageable once someone knows
  • Iron, always, before blood work
  • Anything for a child with a kidney, heart, thyroid or autoimmune condition

Say the herbs out loud

A lot of women take things and don't mention them at appointments, bracing for an eye-roll.

Mention them anyway. A good provider wants to know which are fine, which are pointless, and which interact with something you're already taking.

Caring for the whole person has never meant refusing the fastest help available when someone you love is genuinely sick.
