Privacy policy

Short version: we collect as little as possible, we never sell your email address, and outbound retailers have their own policies we don't control.

Note for launch: this is a starting template. Have it reviewed against your jurisdiction's requirements (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) before you start collecting email addresses or running ads.

What we collect

  • Email address, only if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter. Used to send the newsletter. Not sold, not rented, not shared with advertisers.
  • Basic analytics — pages viewed, approximate region, device type, and referring site, measured with Google Analytics. Used to understand which articles are useful. We do not use it to build advertising profiles.
  • Nothing sensitive. We do not ask for, store, or want health information about you or your children.

Cookies and affiliate tracking

We ask before measuring you. Analytics stays switched off until you agree on the notice that appears on your first visit, and declining is remembered — the site works exactly the same either way. Your answer is kept in your own browser's local storage rather than in a cookie of ours.

If you do agree, Google Analytics sets a small number of first-party cookies to tell repeat visits from new ones. They hold a random identifier, not your name or email, and nothing you type into a form is sent to them.

When you click an outbound product link, the destination retailer may set a cookie that credits this site for a resulting purchase. That cookie is set by the retailer, governed by their privacy policy, and typically expires within 24 hours to 30 days depending on the program.

Third parties

  • Vercel hosts this site and processes standard server request logs.
  • Google Analytics measures how the site is used, as described above.
  • Retailers (Amazon, Thrive Market and others) receive you as a visitor when you click out, and their own privacy policies apply from that point.
  • Email provider — if you subscribe, your address is stored with our email service provider for the purpose of sending the newsletter.

Your choices

  • Unsubscribe from any email using the link in its footer.
  • Request a copy of, or deletion of, any personal data we hold about you by contacting us.
  • Change your analytics answer at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser — the notice will ask again on your next visit.
  • Block cookies in your browser — the site works fine without them.
  • Opt out of Google Analytics entirely using Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Children

This site is written for adults caring for children. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
