Blood Sugar + Metabolic Health
Metabolic health is about far more than the number on the scale. Blood sugar, sleep, stress, muscle and hormones all pull on the same thread, and women's bodies are affected by pregnancy and perimenopause in ways that are rarely explained. This guide helps you ask for a clearer picture.
Integrative wellness also means knowing when to ask deeper questions. Bring this with you; tick what applies; add your own. It is a starting point for a conversation with someone qualified — not a checklist that decides anything on its own.
Symptoms and patterns worth mentioning
- Energy crashes after meals, or in the mid-afternoon
- Strong cravings, especially for sugar, or feeling shaky and irritable when hungry
- Weight gain around the middle, or weight that will not shift despite real effort
- Increased thirst, urination, or blurry vision
- Skin changes such as darkened patches at the neck or armpits, or skin tags
- Irregular cycles, or a history of gestational diabetes or PCOS
- Sleep quality, snoring, and stress levels
Questions to ask
- What does my history suggest about my metabolic risk, and what matters most for me?
- How do sleep, stress, and muscle fit into this — not just food?
- What would a sustainable approach look like for someone in my season of life?
- How often should we recheck, and what numbers are we watching?
History worth bringing
- Gestational diabetes, PCOS, or high blood pressure in pregnancy
- Family history of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol
- Your typical eating pattern and movement, without judgment
- Sleep, shift work, and stress
- Medications that can affect weight or blood sugar
- Any previous blood sugar or cholesterol results
Evaluations to ask your provider about
- Ask your healthcare provider whether checking blood sugar — such as fasting glucose or HbA1c — is appropriate for you
- Ask whether a cholesterol panel and blood pressure check are due
- Your provider may consider checking thyroid function, since it affects metabolism
- If your cycles are irregular, ask whether evaluation for PCOS is appropriate
- If you snore or wake unrefreshed, this may be worth discussing with your clinician
