Thyroid Concerns
The thyroid affects energy, weight, temperature, mood, cycles, hair and skin, which is exactly why symptoms get brushed off as 'just being a tired mom'. If you suspect it, this guide helps you say so plainly and ask the right questions.
Integrative wellness also means knowing when to ask deeper questions. Bring this with you; tick what applies; add your own. It is a starting point for a conversation with someone qualified — not a checklist that decides anything on its own.
Symptoms and patterns worth mentioning
- Tiredness, and whether it is unusual for you
- Feeling cold or hot when others do not
- Weight changes without a clear reason
- Hair thinning, dry skin, brittle nails
- Constipation or loose stools
- Low mood, anxiety, brain fog, or a racing heart
- Cycle changes, or difficulty conceiving
- Any swelling or fullness at the front of the neck
Questions to ask
- Do my symptoms fit a thyroid pattern, or could something else explain them?
- If my results are 'normal', is there anything about the range or the timing worth discussing?
- Does my recent pregnancy or breastfeeding affect how we interpret this?
- How often should this be rechecked if we are watching it?
History worth bringing
- Family history of thyroid conditions or autoimmune disease
- Recent pregnancy or birth — thyroid function can change in the year after
- Any previous thyroid results, even old ones
- Medications and supplements, especially anything containing iodine or biotin, which can affect results
- Neck radiation or surgery, if any
Evaluations to ask your provider about
- Ask your healthcare provider whether thyroid function testing is appropriate for you
- Ask whether, alongside TSH, checking free T4 or thyroid antibodies would add useful information in your situation
- Your provider may consider examining your neck, and an ultrasound if anything is felt
- If you are trying to conceive or are pregnant, ask what is recommended for thyroid monitoring
